Steady Against Storm
This storm season, Hurricane Ike dealt a devastating blow to much of the South Texas Gulf Coast, leaving a wake of destruction in its path. Oakwood Shores in Brazoria County, is blessed to have avoided the suffering that so many in the region are forced to confront.
Sound engineering and expert planning in this park-like community enabled Oakwood Shores to escape practically unscathed, with only a few trees limbs down.
Glenn Patton is the Chief of Police in Richwood, Texas and was in charge of assessing damages occurred due to the hurricane. During the storm, Chief Patton patrolled the city, including the Oakwood Shores community, until it was too dangerous drive. He resumed his watch as soon as the storm had passed enough that it was safe to do so.
In the aftermath of Ike, Chief Patton presided over a massive clean up effort in the area. Yet he was so impressed by the structural stability and engineering in place at Oakwood Shores, he found time to write a letter to Oakwood leaders in praise of their community.
“With a ten foot surge in tide affecting our area, in addition to a 7-10 foot high tide,” he wrote, “I observed the bayou to remain in its banks and the drainage system to be working very efficiently, with no problems prior to or after the storm.” He continued, “There was no flooding problem to the property at Oakwood Shores.”
